Good fun with the “Riley’s”

After a lovely meal in the evening, and a wind down, a few drinks, we had a good nights sleep.

imageimageToday was Remembrance Day , and in France they have a holiday, whatever day it falls on, so no school, so after breakfastimage, and catch up on jobs (washing and ironing) we went for a walk around a beautiful lake, the children took their scooters, and had great fun weaving in and out of the water, which had flooded parts of the path, they certainly have had a lot of rain here, over the last few days.

imageMax and Tobyn, enjoyed the play area, climbing the string ropes, and down the slides, they had lots of different rides, which they thoroughly enjoyed, we stopped for a cup of tea, and coffee, then onto the roundabout, a lovely time was had by all.image

back home, we had a lovely dinner, then to bed, early start tomorrow.

Journey to the Riley’s

Having left the Hotel, we had decided to catch the ferry at Royan, so we headed for Lacaneau-ocean to see what the weather was like and to have a coffee

imageOut of the car, we headed for the beach, the sea was very rough, it was very very windy, and of course cold.  We headed back for coffee, when it started to rain again, so following the coffee, we went next door for oysters bread and wine, it appears it is the place to go on a Sunday morning, as it was crowded.

we decided to forget about the ferry as it might not even be imagerunning, so drove to Mike and Catriona, taking the scenic route.

we had a lovely welcome from the boys, played a game of Uno, had a lovely curry meal, and settled down to watch Strictly, lovely day was had by all.

Thirty years on!

30 Years on!

Awoke bright and early, well not very bright and not too early as it looked a miserable day, still we are here in Arcachon for two reasons, firstly for Christine to see and climb the largest Sand Dune, “Dune de Pilat” in Europe and for me to enjoy fresh oysters, but first breakfast. Having had a couple of bad weeks before leaving home and a few nights in a hotel plus restaurant meals etc., we thought we should ease up a bit so had some cereal in our room; a gesture towards our diets, ha ha!!!!!!

First the Dune de Pilat, I distinctly remember that after the last climb to the top imageapproximately 30 years ago, I stated quite clearly I would never climb that sand hill again, huh, that didn’t’ work! After a tour about town trying to find the right road to the “base camp” we parked and started the “trek”. It started as a steep hill walking in soft sand but as we neared the first plateau, it got steeper. Each time a step was taken and the weight transferred to the foot, the soft sand gave way and the foot went back down; each step gimageained about 2 inches and if that was not enough, it was so steep we were on all fours, but in the vertical position!!!!!! At last we arrived at the top of what turned out to only be the first climb. After a short rest we were off again, trudging through the soft sand. Oh yes by this point our shoes were filled with the stuff! Anyway we eventually arrived at the top, 109 metres above sea level but judging by how many steps we took, it seemed like 5 imageKilometres high. At this point we had the full force of the wind along with the sand being blown into every nook and cranny, so a few quick pictures and we were off back down again. As you can imagine, The descent took a fraction of the time it took us to climb the wretched thing. I will say it again, and this time I am sticking to it, I WILL NEVER CLIMB THE DUNE de PILAT, AGAIN! Twice in any bodies lifetime is enough. Still back at base camp, cold, shoes and socks full of sand, sand in our hair, ears and eyes and god knows where else, we had our sanity restored over cups of coffee and tea.

Next we were off to find a suitable restaurant for oysters, but first via a supermarket as we imagewanted to eat in this evening. We found a rather large “Intermarche” supermarket and after some heated discussions about what to buy we were on our way. We stopped for diesel as we left and were amazed at the price, €1.26 per litre, even cheaper than Spain; what a result though compared to €1.10 per litre in Andorra, still expensive.

By now the rain and wind was beyond the pail, we; well I, was grumpy, cold and hungry, not a good combination so we drove into the centre of Arcachon to find food. The place was deserted and most restaurants were closed but after preservering, we found imagesomewhere that not only sold oysters but was busy as well, always a good sign to eat there. By this time caution went to the wind, the full 3 course “Plat De Jour” was called for and very nice it was too,all washed down with suitable local wine.

By now it was mid afternoon so had to try and walk some of the lunch off so we tried to stroll along the sea front but with our umbrella blown inside out, the rain lashing us, our feet wet as there were more puddles than dry places, this didn’t take too long. So back to our hotel room and a few games of crib. Oh yes the food we bought for to night went into the freezer as we were still full from lunch time!!!!!

Journey to France

We decided to leave breakfast this morning, and head of to France, so we continued over the Pyrenees, with the fabulous views of the valleys, with all the trees turning different 20131109-102650.jpgimagecolours, really spectacular, we stopped after the border and had a picnic breakfast then travelled onto Arcachon, the weather has  now changed! we have gone from sunny and 12 degrees to similar temperatures, but raining and very miserable. Our main objective was to get a cup of tea/coffee, and after numerous attempts, the cafe were either closed for holidays or being refitted, eventually we found a place, we were sitting having a nice drink when a coach load of Chinese people arrived, so we moved on!
We arrived at Hotel about 6pm, booked ourselves in then went for dinner, it took us ages to find a restaurant, definitely out of seasons here, it was a horrible night weather wise, although food was good.

Our first day in Andorra

20131108-071929.jpg

After a good night’s sleep we went down to the Hotel Restaurant for a hearty breakfast, though for €8.00 each it was not that hearty, still we are on holiday and this is Andorra where Tourists are one of their main source of incomes.

20131107-191234.jpgAfter an enjoyable walk through their capital (Andorra La Vella) we found their central park and with Autumn in the air and the foliage changing colour, it was a sight to behold; add to this a fast running river running alongside, our spectacle was complete. It was now time for a mid morning coffee.

Re charged we were off again and we came across the Centre of “administrative affairs”, imagewell government buildings to you and us, we wandered into this old looking building 20131108-071939.jpgwhich turned out to be the original Government offices and parliament. We booked a tour for 1330 hrs. So had 45 minutes to kill so looked around for a suitable restaurant where we could retire to after. The tour started (just the two of us and the guide) of these parliament buildings that were built in 1580 and learnt some of the Andorran history, which was fascinating, we didn’t realize the complexities of their history, it was well worth the visit. Our tour must have been the last of the morning as we were shown the exit door, must be their lunch time!!

imageimageBy now it was time for our long and lingering lunch; we had already found a suitable restaurant, specializing in fish rice dishes, Paella to most people!! Here we enjoyed a couple of bottles of local red accompanied by first and second courses, or should I say food accompanied by wine, who knows other than to say we had an excellent lunch where we unwound, after all it was the start of our holidays following and exhausting summer back in Spain, Ha Ha!!!!!

20131107-190754.jpgAnother stroll through the town looking for this and that then back to the Hotel for a picnic in our room; after all we had to finish the food we brought with us!!!

We are off again on our travels!

Our last night in Spain, we spent with Mary and Barry, I was so exhausted, I hit the red vino, so very quickly I began talking too much, we had a lovely night, playing whist and Mexican train, I think I lost all games, but hey my back felt better, and couldn’t remember going to bed that night! Thank you both,so very much for everything, we will be back soon!
Up early finished cleaning cooker, changing beds, and general cleaning, ready for breakfast at 10.30am, quick visit to Mary to apologies, for anything I had done the night before, and drop the washing off, said goodbye to Bella, although she did not seem to be bothered about me, then off to meet Daf and Steve for breakfast, which was lovely, and glad Daf is now on the mend, after her back op.
We finally set of at midday, with nine hours on tom tom we were concerned we were going to be late arriving Andorra.
We had a lovely journey, no big motorways, no tolls, and lots of lovely scenery, although the best would have been arriving in Andorra, but it was too dark to see. We arrived at 19.30, which was very good timing, we ate our packed lunch in Hotel, with a glass or two of wine, I then fell into bed exhausted.
