At Sea

Monday. Well we have settled down to a very relaxing way of life, the weather is getting warmer everyday we have travelled a few miles now, and we are slowly approaching Mexico, should be there by the morning.

The pool is still not warm enough for me, but maybe in a few days. We went for a lecture on how to improve your memory, it was quite good, and maybe we should keep going to the lectures to improve, we will have to see if we can fit them in. In the afternoon the magician taught us one of his tricks, and explained why magician’s raise their arms, that was really interesting , apparently our brains are taught to follow the arm/hand which travels the fastest, and obviously they are doing things with the other hand, whilst we are watching the one higher up. Lots more to it, but of course I have forgotten most of it! I really enjoyed his lecture apparently he is on again later in the week, so we will go back for that.

In the evening we went to one of the specialist restaurants,

the decor was red and black it was really good, the food was really tasty, sadly Geoff wasn’t feeling to special, so he didn’t eat or drink a lot, but I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. We are going back in a couple of days time, so that Geoff can enjoy more.

Later we went and watched a trombonist, he could almost make his instrument speak, he was very good, and the resident band played with him, great evening. The lighting on the stage, and pictures of New York etc., were excellent.

Boarding Sirena

The day has finally arrived, we had our normal breakfast, lots of fresh fruit, then an omelette, we are trying to stick to reasonable diet, although the cookies and croissants are a problem and hard to avoid.

We packed our cases, checked out and the shuttle bus took us to the ship in the port, we should have waited for a guy to take our cases, but we foolishly took them with us, which meant because we were early boarding our rooms were not complete, so we were ushered to the dining area, where we could take a light lunch whilst waiting. I have to say the food looks delicious.
Geoff purchased a full drinks package, as he worked out he could only have four drinks a day and pay the same price, so between us we will get our monies worth! Fortunately all soft drinks are inclusive, which makes my life easy.

Our home for 35 days

We unpacked our stuff, nice to be organised, and know we do not move again for 35 days. Plenty of storage space, rooms really comfortable, especially the bed.

By the time we were organised it was dinner time, so we went to this really sumptuous restaurant, had dinner watched the show, then crawled into bed, my body clock is still on Uk time, and we are eight hours behind, so having a few problems sleeping.

Sunday we spent discovering where everything was on the ship, the weather is getting warmer, and some people were in the

pool yet. We played mini golf, which was fun, went to a seminar on the excursions, but decided that we would rather meander at our own pace and get buses or taxis, when we want them.
Two days in, and still being careful with the food and drink, how long will this last I wonder!
After another lovely meal, main course lobster, we went to

couldn’t. I was called onto the stage to help with one of the tricks, I did say why are we sitting in the front row!
Another lovely day, surprising how quick the time goes.

San Diego

Our BA flight”s landing last night was rather reminiscent of a Ryanair landing: coming in fast and stamping on the brakes, this was quite something. Anyway, this morning we woke earlier than we had wanted to but looking out of the window and seeing blue skies we were happy to get on with it and make the best use of our one day in San Diego.

After a hearty breakfast we took the hotel’s shuttle bus to downtown San Diego where we were told we could walk to the “Seaport Village” and “Old Town”, two areas that would give us the best feel of the place. What we weren’t told was the shuttle dropped us at the town’s main shopping mall, just where we wanted to be, I think not: we don’t like shopping. The driver pointed us in the direction of Seaport Village but when asked, he toldus Old Town was approximately 5 miles in the opposite direction; quite different from what the receptionist told us.

We wandered down to the Seaport Village area, passing the tram station as we went. This area is mainly made up of small boutique shops and restaurants but it was right on San Diego bay, in lovely surroundings, so well worth a stroll around,

this was followed by a coffee (no Brandy!!), siting in the sun, so warm we had to remove excess clothes.

After coffee we decided to go to Old Town but instead of taking a taxi as the shuttle bus driver suggested, we went back to the train station and got on a tram and 5 stops later, arrived at 65b2377e-2e2f-4b42-bebf-765e110a046dOld Town.

En route to Old Town, we passed the San Diego International airport and we then appreciated why the Pilot did what he did landing the plane. There are high rise buildings all around and what appeared to be quite a short runway: Pilot forgiven!!!!!

Walking around Old Town, today a heritage area, you get a good feel and understanding of the place. Created in 1769 it was California’s first settlement with only a mission and a fort. In the early

1800’s the town grew, mainly as a port for ships travelling up and down the Pacific from San Fransisco round Cape Horn and back up the Eastern Seaboard then later, 1848, gold was discovered and that’s when the gold rush began and San Diego took off. Though only a small number of the buildings were original, most have been reconstructed in that period. Many of the buildings were kitted out as they would have been in the middle to late 1800’s and the centre of all this is the Wells Fargo office, with an original stage coach, one of a

Whilst in Old Town we decided this was where we would have a late lunch, unfortunately all the restaurants were Mexican, naturally, and all the meals had something on that one or other of us didn’t fancy, so we strolled out and found a sort of “rib joint” where we had one of their large meat dishes, though for one, we shared it. Boy it was too much for us, we left a fair amount. I asked the waitress if anyone ever eat “the lot” to which she replied “yes”, good grief, that may account for some of the sites we have seen around!l

San Diego is also a large Naval Base, much of its Pacific fleet operates from here. There is the aircraft carrier USS Midway, commissioned 1 week after the end of WW2, now a museum. We didn’t go on her as we had both been on the USS Intrepid, (a WW2 Carrier), last time we were in New York. Also in Town was another Aircraft carrier across the bay, name unknown and no doubt in active service.1d9fe782-e24b-475d-91b6-41316e03bf92

Time to get back to the hotel for tomorrow is the big day when we start our 35 days aboard the Oceania Serena, which we watched arrive earlier today, here early no doubt to load sufficient provisions for us ????

A quiet night in, a game of cards to wile away the time, an early night and then off………

Business Class All the way

Having enjoyed the executive lounge, Geoff is a member courtesy of his bank, we headed for the departure lounge, which was further than we thought, as we had to catch the train, anyway when we arrived, there was a delay in loading, so we just sat down and waited, I thought they called us through, but Geoff said no so we waited. When we eventually got to the desk, the lady said, could she have our tickets as we were being upgraded, we didn’t argue with her, she said we wouldn’t be together would that be a problem, we quickly said no that’s ok, we would suffer the separation! Well when we got on board, the guy that was sitting next to Geoff, quickly swapped with him, so there we were, sitting together as well, what a treat, it has been a long time since we have been in these seats.

The champagne was almost non stop, although I think I drank all the sparkling water that was on board, the food tasted better when it was on proper china plates with knives and forks, instead of the tin foil and plastic cutlery.

I watched Dunkirk, and Elf the film, and just laid back and enjoyed the experience.

Benefits of Business Class we were one of the first off, so we were also first in the queue for immigration, so we cleared that very quickly, our bags were ages coming off, but I guess that’s because we were early booking in, anyway it didn’t matter we cleared Customs, a very relaxing flight, thank you British Airways.

It is 2am UK time, and 18.00 California time, we are both tired but want to stay awake for a few more hours, to get rid of the time difference, we are now in Hilton Hotel, on the waterfront so we will explore tomorrow.

Our journey begins……

Sunday. Our journey home from Manchester, the snow had spread South, it was slow, very cold, and torturous, instead of the normal four hours, it took over seven hours, apparently every seven minutes there was an accident, we saw lorries jack knifed, cars crunched, people walking on the motorways having abandoned their cars, I for one was glad we got back to Jane’s, especially as there was a steak and kidney pie waiting for us. Despite the journey, the trip was well worth doing as the show was magical, and it was good to meet up with Andrew, Liz, Marian and Martin, many thanks to all.

We couldn’t do much the next couple of days, Geoff had his car serviced, I babysat Mia, the snow was quite deep, Jane was ok with her four wheel drive car, we couldn’t get our car out we just skidded on the ice in the yard.

Thursday. I was awake really early, couldn’t get back to sleep, really excited, so up showered and breakfast, out of hotel before 9am, we were going by shuttle bus, but taxi was so much easier, the Uber man was really friendly and helpful. Couldn’t book our seats on line, which was really worrying, but we now are sitting in the executive lounge, drinking champagne, having sorted everything.

Now we are off on our holiday of a lifetime, let’s hope it’s lives up to our expectations……..

We collected our car, and travelled north, they are threatening severe weather conditions for tomorrow, should we be going, a definite yes.

We dropped our stuff off at Hotel parked car in NCP car parks, and went with Marian and Martin to Salford Quays, what a great place, BBC,ITV, even Coronation Street are here, with lots of restaurants and the Lowry Theatre, and a shopping Mall.

The Lowry Theatre

Met Andrew and we all went for a meal, lovely to see him again, also Liz managed to escape before the show, the Theatre is very modern, with lots of weird and wonderful shapes, and can sit over 1700 people, we took our seats, Andrew sneaked in with us, without a ticket, but then decided to go backstage to see Liz.

Well what a show, it was fabulous, so entertaining, not sure I have seen such a good Christmas show before, all of the cast were brilliant, and I really enjoyed seeing Liz sing, I have never heard her before, she has a lovely voice. I believe it is being broadcast on Channel 5 over the Xmas period, I recommend people to watch it.
