Train to LA

After having lots of chats and answering emails, we decided to go to LA again, but this time to see where The train leaves from on Thursday, don’t want to miss it. Plus today it is raining, and very windy, so not a nice day to go to Long Beach.

We caught the free bus, and after getting off the bus at the wrong place, we caught another, we got to the station where we had to work out how to pay for train, you had to get a tap card first, which is like our Oyster Cards, anyway we did it, had a pleasant trip, managed to change trains at the right place, worked out all the lifts, as we will have our luggage with us. We eventually found the Amtrak station, where if you have a sleeper you can use the private lounge, also we found out if we don’t want all our luggage in the room they will store for us, and deliver it at the end, the guy took the Mickey out of us, being English, and said he looked forward to seeing us on Thursday.

I fancied going to Denys for lunch, which we found, and we then started making our way back, where we had to change, we decided to have a walk around in Downtown L.A., the shops are huge, and the buildings even taller, we found Macey’s but it was closed for renovations. We did find this lovely cake shop, where we walked around looking at them all, but because we had just had lunch we would not have done them justice.

We meandered around then found the train, and headed back, when we arrived,we walked around Long Beach Downtown, then headed for the smaller shops on the waterfront, I grabbed a cuppa, and we caught the bus back to the ship.

Back to playing crib, which I am pleased to say the girlies are still winning, most unusual, we are both tired, so early to bed.

Hollywood Los Angeles

Up early, had time for a quick tea, and croissant, the bus arrived early, only one other couple so we were not squashed in.
We headed out of Long Beach, and towards Hollywood, the traffic was amazing, fortunately our driver has a pass that he can go in the express lane, so we missed most of the queues.
First stop was the Coliseum , where they had the Olympics in 1984 and in the 1930’s, it was massive,

20151221-170331.jpg the stadium could hold two football pitches back to back, and it can hold over 100,000 people. We also went to the science Museum where they have one of the Space Shuttles, and several jet fighters, we didn’t go in, as we had already been to Cape Kennedy some years ago.
Next came the Hollywood Walk of Fame, we walked all around here, that was great seeing all the famous names, Tarantino apparently was getting his later today, so some of the area was closed.

20151221-170958.jpg my favourite one was Bob Hope, cos he was brilliant

20151221-171211.jpg
We walked all along Hollywood Boulevard, lots going on, it was great fun. We were told to go up an escalator if we wanted the best view over Hollywood, and to picture the sign so we did that as well, we actually found a service lift, so we used that, it was huge, but I got the picture.

20151221-171624.jpg
As well as the stars on the pavement, apparently the stars put there handprint and feet in some cases! In cement, they have an area for that too

20151221-171833.jpg
We then moved onto Sunset Strip, where if you were lucky you might see some stars, we stopped at Mel’s Diner on Sunset Plaza, where apparently Paul McCartney goes quite often sadly he was not there today

20151221-172217.jpg. We were there quite early, but the food was very good, I had a rare beef burger!
We left there and passed some of the stars homes, and where they like to play. We went to Rodeo Drive, one of the most glamorous streets in the U.S. Apparently it can cost over 1million dollars a week to rent a shop there, all the names were there

20151221-172615.jpg

20151221-172639.jpg
The pictures do not do it justice, but some of the shops had had a 5 million dollar make overs , so that should give you an idea!
Next we went to Santa Monica, a very old scenic town, with 26 miles of beach, never overcrowded even on July 4th.

20151221-173031.jpg
Later we travelled onto Venice Beach, apparently they tried to do what we have, a town on the water, but it did not work, some of the inlets still exist, but for the main, it has been reverted back to roads again. We walked along the boardwalk, where we found the famous Muscle Beach

20151221-173434.jpg not quite how I imagined it, and so very small, we didn’t see anyone pumping iron today. They had street entertainers and craft markets, they also sold tubs of fruit which I couldn’t resist. they were lovely, missing the fruit bar on board the ship!
Time to head home, but I have to say we had a wonderful full day.

Long Beach

Up early, the boat has berthed in the Port, and we are all packed ready to go, we went for breakfast, and met up with Jan and Mike said our good byes, and then disembarked, it only took us twenty five minutes to clear customs and we were free, the only problem was we had a taxi booked for 11am and it was only 9am, so we tried to cancel the car, and we got into a taxi. We reached the Queen Mary, and I was a bit taken back, it needs a bit of updating, everything looks very tired. We booked in, dropped the luggage off, then had a coffee at Starbucks.

20151221-164018.jpg we wondered around the ship, went to the tour operator, thinking we could book something, but no luck, oh dear what have we done!
We then decided to catch a bus downtown Long Beach, to see if we could hire a car, or get a tour into Hollywood, well the first surprise was that they have a local free bus that you can take, so we hopped on, didn’t have a clue where we were going but decided to just go with it. First stop was a little tiny village, which was on the waterfront, we didn’t know whether to get off or not, so we stayed on, as we were leaving we saw an “Tourist Information Booth” so the next stop we got off, and walked back, it is so pretty around here, little tiny boutique type shops, with lots of restaurants on the waterfront.

20151221-164810.jpg. We could see the Queen Mary in the distance, and enjoyed walking back along the waters edge, we stopped at the booth, and Pat was so helpful, she told us about a day tour going to Hollywood, told us about the trains for when we leave here, and also where the local Walmart was.
I need my nails done, and although it is a Sunday we took a chance, the bus driver told us where to get off, and we made our way to Walmart, but they didn’t do them there, but they directed me to another shop, and within two minutes I was having them done, so another job sorted. We then went to the rail station, but couldn’t find anything out as it was closed for maintenance. Still we know where we have to go.
We started walking back, but Geoff found an Irish Pub so we stopped for a Guinness or two, then walked onto “Outback” we used to go to these restaurants with Jane and Dave, but the Essex one is closed

20151221-165637.jpg
We had a lovely big steak, as we have time to digest it before going to bed, as it is only five o clock, we caught the bus back to the ship, and just crashed out, it’s been a busy day.

Two days at sea

The further north we go, the cooler it gets, we did go in the pool today, but there is a cold north wind, so it’s warmer in the pool than out, we spent more time in the pool, than sitting around, the wind is biting.
We played shuffleboard with Jan and Mike, it is a very frustrating game, it takes you ages to get points, and when you do the opposition knocks you out. Anyway the boys won, and we moved on to ping pong, we played best of three and this time the girls won! We are all getting better, and actually managing to do rallies!
Today it is Pub lunch again, so we popped in for fish and chips, but we left the chips, time to cut back, we are getting so fat! Plus tonight is formal night. After lunch we played golf, they have a crazy golf course, which was great fun, the boys won again, but it took them twelve holes, before they won, we were very close.
We went back to the room, and changed for dinner, I actually got into my long black dress, felt bloated but at least I made it. Tonight it was farewell dinner, and we had lobster, and beef Wellington, oh boy what a dinner, we had the lobster as a starter, but they gave us the whole thing, it was gorgeous, what a pair of piggies we have been.
Before dinner, they had a choir singing carols, and the Captain said a few words, we were all given champagne, and after dinner they had a party in the Atrium, where they dropped loads of balloons, lots of dancing, lots of fun.

20151220-192628.jpg

Up early, washing and ironing done by 10am, Geoff had started the packing, in between the washing and ironing, we went to the Provence restaurant for breakfast, it was closer to the laundry, it was nice to be waited on.
When the washing was finished, we went for a talk on ‘behind the scenes’ which was all about the theatre, we were able to stand on the stage, and experienced what it was like to be a dancer, they don’t know if they have an audience or not, only by hearing the applause as they cannot see anyone from on stage.

20151220-193231.jpg

20151220-193257.jpg
They took us into the changing rooms, and where they have all their dresses, very tiny, not sure how they cope, it was very interesting.
After lunch which we went for an Italian pizza, cooked especially as we wanted it, have to say we are being spoilt here.
After lunch we tried to play shuffleboard, but it was so cold we gave up. Then we played golf, it took us sixteen holes before we came to a winner, and that was me, I was chuffed, as I haven’t played for years.
We met Jan and Mike for dinner, which was very good as usual, then played dominoes, the boys actually won, well done.

Cabo San Lucas Mexico

Up early again, this time no trips booked, we are just going ashore, we were so disappointed with the trips in San Juan, we cancelled the trip and decided to do our own thing.

We took breakfast in Horizon, and then decided to wait in lounge for disembarkment, we were number 500 and something, and they were only calling 100, oh dear it’s going to be a long wait. Then they called 100 – 200 and the people next to us decided they would not go, but get a later tender, and they gave us their. ticket, we were there boarding immediately, and so grateful to them, apparently Mike and Jan didn’t get off until midday!

20151220-184813.jpg20151220-185228.jpg

Lovely atmosphere though, and we talked to some of the locals, we found the recommended lobster restaurant, and Geoff peri used the menu, yes we might come back here. We carried on walking, and eventually came to the beach we both needed the love, well we had to pay a dollar for the privilege, mine was so tiny, I couldn’t sit down without hitting my knees on the door, so funny, but necessary.
We then went onto the beach, I was desperate to swim in the Pacific, cos I had done Caribbean etc., and I had finally done it!

20151220-185642.jpg
Then Geoff reminded me that I had swam in the Galapagos, anyway we both enjoyed it, that’s Geoff’s feet sticking up in the water!
We then caught the water taxi back to the marina, where we went back to the lobster restaurant, and what a fabulous meal we had, the lobsters were still alive in an aquarium! I had fish stuffed with shrimp, and lobster in a cheese sauce, very good.

20151220-190121.jpg
Finally we made our way back to the ship, where we had a very quiet night, we were tired, and very full, but very relaxed.

Three days at Sea

First day sailing, so Jan and I decided to do some washing, well we wished we hadn’t bothered, as everyone else had the same idea, Jan came up with lunchtime, and she was right, we managed to put the washing in before lunch, rush through a pub lunch, and take it out after, straight into a free dryer, that’s the darks done, whites tomorrow, plus of course there’s the ironing to do at sometime.
One of the restaurants converts into a pub once a week, you can get scampi and chips, fish and chips, chicken curry, and scotch egg and salad, last week they had steak kidney pie, fish and chips and a ploughman’s, it makes a change the only problem is it always clashes with a formal night. I went back to the room, where I was supposed to be meeting Geoff, he was longer than I thought, he had been roped in to do the “sexy leg competition”. and guess what he won! wish I had been there to watch, he won another water bottle.
After lunch and finishing washing we went on top deck and played shuffleboard with Jan and Mike, we were not very good at it, but the girls are leading. We then took our daily swim, jacuzzi and cocktails, met another couple from UK, who were giving us some great ideas for future holidays, they have certainly been to some great places.
Formal night tonight, well I decided I wouldn’t even bother to try my long dresses, and to wear the dress I had for the christening, just before I came away, well I did get into it, but oh boy it’s very tight, I think my boobs must have grown three sizes, strangely enough my hips are still ok! Geoff put one shirt on, he was so hot struggling with the collar he had to change too, but his suit fits him fine.
We had a lovely meal, then watched the show, and then rushed back to the room to change, and go and play table tennis, when we got there we came out at the wrong place, and ended up playing crazy golf, I really enjoyed it, after, we played table tennis, the girls lost by one point, so not disgraced. The table football was a joke, the boys just whitewashed us, after all that, Geoff went for a swim and then we all went to bed. Guess what we are still being told “I have the sexiest legs on board” ha ha ha

Second Day

We had a lay in, in fact I didn’t wake up until late, so we feel fit to play again. Breakfast was very busy, so we didn’t linger, Geoff wanted to go for a talk on Ships, it was all about the cruising business, he thoroughly enjoyed it, I went to do the ironing, and another load of washing, which worked very well, I met Mike and Jan, for coffee, Geoff was now listening to another talk on Mexico, our next port of call.
Meanwhile I finished the washing, and some of the ironing, we all met at the coffee Lounge and enjoyed coffee, and the boys had their brandies.
We stayed until lunch, then went to the buffet, where I had a little salmon, with a big salad, time to cut back! Otherwise I will not fit in to anything!
After lunch we took a swim, did lots of exercise, avoided the jacuzzi, but kept swimming, the sea is as calm as I have ever seen it, but the pool was like it had a wave pool in, it was great fun. Jan has disappeared to do the ironing, when she returned we went and played shuffleboard, it is quite a hard game, and sadly the girls lost, but we then played three games of ping pong, and we won, so all is equal on that front!
Another swim was taken before we changed for dinner, went to the show, which I fell asleep in, I am shattered. So an early night was taken. We get an extra hour in bed tonight, as the clocks go back one hour.

Third Day at Sea

Last night we had to change our clocks again, so we went back another hour, yippee an extra hours sleep, I think we are now seven hours behind UK! Well you would expect to wake up early, but no we slept till 8am, so we were late for breakfast and missed Mike and Jan altogether.
I caught up with the ironing, and Geoff watched a film on Princess Grace of Monaco, we then went for coffee, and after had a game of shuffleboard. We are getting better, and only lost by 2 points, which can’t be bad.
We went for lunch in the restaurant, the starters were very good, but we were disappointed with the mains, still can’t please everyone.
After dinner the weather has become overcast and chilly, with a lot of wind, but we went swimming and went into the jacuzzi, we stayed in for a while, it was warmer in the pool then outside.
We didn’t stay long, but went back to the room, to see if I could get into my long dresses, which I can, so will be wearing one of them for the last formal night on Friday.
The show started early tonight, and the guy had a fabulous voice, he could sing Ray Charles, Brook Benson, Louis Armstrong, he was amazing, really enjoyed it.
We then went to watch a film, then went onto a Country and Weston night, with an adult comedian after, so we had a busy fun evening.
