Machu Picchu

We are gradually getting acclimatised, but I was still awake before theMachu Picchu 001 alarm went off at 6.30 am, so we both got up, had a lovely lazy breakfast, and were ready to go by 7.45 am, we were collected from the Hotel and delivered to the train station in Machu Picchu 005Ollantaytambo, another busy station, but very organised, we were told that our train was after the one waiting in the station, so we sat and watched it depart, shortly after ours arrived and we boarded, trouble was Geoff had only given me one ticket, and he had already boarded, but they let me on, then of course he had no seat number, so he took someone else’s seat, after a Machu Picchu 008few words they agreed he could sit next to me.

Lovely comfortable train, with everyone having tables, and the views on the way to Machu Picchu were very spectacular, the river runs Machu Picchu 015alongside the railway, and some of the mountains were covered in snow.  Whilst travelling the 90 minutes they served us with a roll, fresh fruit, and a drink, very civilised.

On arriving at Aguas Calientes (hot springs) we met our guide named Sonia, she arranged for the bell boys to take our baggage to the Hotel where we were staying tonight.

We then walked to a bus which took us to Machu Picchu it was a 25 minute single track road, where at certain points other buses could pass,  8km of road that had lots of hairpin bends, with cobbles in most places, very bumpy, and we were glad to get off.

Spanish invaders the Inca Empire fell.

It was a fascinating trip, and although history goes over my head most of the time, I found it interesting.

We went up and down the steps, wandered through the houses, temples warehouses and central square, which made up the lost city.

Marvelled at the way stones had been carved to fit, how did they do this all those years ago.

Later we left the site, and had lunch at the sanctuary restaurant, Pan Pipes were playing, before descending in the bus again, we then slowly walked through the town, until we arrived at our Hotel Inkaterra.

We were given our room which is very nice, but so many steps to get up to it, poor Geoff was struggling to breathe at the end, we tried to change rooms, but the Hotel is full, so we will just have to take it easy. When unpacking Geoff found his train ticket!!!

We did not feel like anything else to eat, with the high altitude, we are having trouble digesting food, and breathing, although at present we are only 2000 meters above sea level, tomorrow we will be 3800 meters, so we will have to take things easy.

Lima – Cusco – Sacred Valley

18th April

Well, after an 11 hour night and having slept right through we were back to normal; boy did we need it!!!  Down for breakfast for 0600 hrs, fantastic spread again, completed and out of the restaurant by 0640 where our guide was waiting to take us to the airport.  Again another “interesting” drive.  Driving here in Lima is between being in Cairo and a Banger race track, mad or what?  And the noise from horns is constant, yet no one takes a blind bit of notice! Our guide also gave us advice about living in the high altitude in Cusco etc., only eat easily digested foods as it takes twice as long to digest and have lots of energy drinks.  Cusco is a little under 4,000 meters, fairly high.

We arrived at the airport and our guide chaperoned us through and deposited us at security, now we were on our own.  An excellent flight and though only 1 hour 20 mins unlike Ryanair or Easy Jet, not only did we have massive leg room, we were given a soft drink and a box containing several types of biscuit, there’s a novelty!  The flight followed the Andes, this reminded me of the flight I took along the tops of the Himalayas, These snow capped mountains are just as rugged but not quite so high.  I felt sorry for the pilot as he had a tortuous route in around the mountains before dropping down to find the runway, still he did, and it was  a fine landing, better than the one arriving into Lima.  As soon as they opened the plane’s door, we could feel the thinner air, the guide was right.

After collecting our bags we met our new guide as we walked out of the airport and into our own private bus.  Here we were briefed on the next few days of our adventure.  We were then left to the mercies of our driver, a very nice chap but with little English, but with our little Spanish, we all did very well.

This was a very interesting drive, up mountains and down dales, with numerous stops along the way to take ‘photos.  Beautiful scenery, very green, yet with a fabulous back drop of the rugged Andes mountains.

Finally we dropped down into the Sacred Valley and then found our hotel, the Sol y Luna. Wow, this is an amazing hotel, no normal bedrooms here, just 28 individual chalets called Casitas set in the most amazing gardens that neither of us have experienced before.

Before we could go exploring or have lunch, we had to re-organise our cases as we can only take one piece of small hand luggage on the train up to Machu Picchu yet have sufficient for two nights, still task completed and off went our main cases with our guide, hopefully to be repatriated in a couple of days time, keeping our fingers crossed.

Bags away and into the restaurant where we ate “local’, I had Crispy Guinea pig legs and Christine had Alpaca Steak as starters followed by local farmed Trout, everything was excellent.

Following lunch we wandered around these beautiful gardens and sat in the sun, yes hot sun, wonderful, then back to our chalet for showers before dinner.

Well we didn’t actually make “dinner” as we’re were still bloated from lunch however, as we didn’t have desert with lunch we did indulge with a desert as our evening dinner with a Piña Collada for me and a fruit (no alcohol) punch for Christine.

A nice stroll through the gardens at night, equally magnificent, then back to our chalet for another early night as we have to be up by 0630 hrs tomorrow morning to catch the train to Machu Picchu

Heathrow – Madrid – Lima Peru

16th April, 2013

Well we left Horndean, having dropped the dogs at Kathleen and Tom’s, they then came and collected us to take us to Heathrow.  On route we stopped at The Links, at Liphook, I have not been there for years, very nice, and we had a lovely meal there, a bit expensive but hey its the start of the honeymoon.

We arrived a bit early so we did a bit of shopping, before we could hand our bags in, our flight was at 6.40 pm, we flew on an old air bus, which was very comfortable plus it was empty, we arrived at Madrid with two hours to spare for the next one, we managed to change our seats to sit together, then we played crib, and soon it was time to board.  This flight was packed a Boeing 767. 300 much smaller plane, and heaving, not a spare seat in sight, it was not too bad as we had plenty of leg room, and we managed to sleep plus take in two movies.  It was a 12 hour flight so you can imagine we were knackered, plus for some reason my feet have swollen. We did the immigration and customs and there outside was our taxi to the Hotel, so far so good.

Peru Lima and Hotel Sol & Luna Sacred Valley 014The traffic on route to the Hotel was amazing, horns hooting, everyone jostling for space, five lanes, crammed into three, reminded me of Cairo City, most cars had damage, but no onePeru Lima and Hotel Sol & Luna Sacred Valley 008 seemed to care, they just kept going.

When we arrived we were told we could not book in until 10.00 am we are six hours behind UK, so it was only 7.30 am, so we decided to go and have a two hour buffet breakfast in the Hotel, it was lovely, and just what we needed.

Lima Casa Andina Hotel 001We were given our room, which is really comfortable, had showers and rested on the bed, we then went to the pool for a swim, sauna, and general chill out, very refreshing.

Went back to room, showered again, and then went for a walk down to the Ocean that is what they say out here, we call the sea,

we wondered around, and then found a restaurant looking over the ‘Ocean’ and had a lovely meal.

Busy place Lima we were in one of the districts called Mirofoiles, the upmarket part, the problem is we could be anywhere as the shops are all the same, Next, Guess, Radio-shack, Starbucks, KFC,  etc.,  etc.,

We wondered back slowly, taking in the embience, back to the Hotel, and I am ashamed to say we were in bed by six, and asleep probably a minute later

Jane and the Nationals, 12th April 2013

On the evening of Thursday 11th April I arrived at the Holiday Inn Express in Gloucester ready for an early start on the Friday, being part of the support team for Jane competing at the Dressage National Championships at Hartpury College,  just outside Gloucester.  Jane had qualified for these Nationals during the year and I was very fortunate they fell between our wedding and our Honeymoon, so that I could lend my support as well, what luck!!!  I was also to be her video cameraman, oh such responsibilities as she needs these videos to look back to see her mistakes etc.

Driving to Gloucester was done with hail stones at times the size of golf balls, torrential rain with the odd glimpses of sun poking through as a tease; what would the weather be like on Friday bearing in mind her tests were outside!!

Arriving at the college in good time for her warm up, only to be sent into a totally separate car park well away from the horse boxes etc., meaning a 10 minute walk down hill (oh, I have to go back up later!!!!!) to get to the arenas, so by the time I was kitted up for all kinds of weather, my good intention of arriving in good time before her warm up went by the way,  she was now well into it; at least she saw me so was relieved as I was there with Camera!!!

0927hrs was her time, so I positioned myself in a suitable place outside the arena and was ready as she approached the perimeter waiting area before her start, the bell went, Jane was officially introduced over the P A system giving a little history about Jane and Herbie as she entered the arena.   About two and a half minutes later she was finished, so we had to wait for her score and when it came it was very good, so we then had to wait ‘till the last competitor had completed to see where she came.

polo mints, apparently he only gets them when he behaves, is that training or bribery, still if it works, good.

This competition has been going throughout the year, all over the UK with the best 60 riders qualifying for these finals.  The 60 then compete with the best 30 competing again in a “final final” later in the day, so Jane’s first task was to get into this

last 30.  As Herbie, [his competition name is “Urban Knight”], is only a 5 year old, he is still a very young horse and therefore still learning his “trade” so, Jane getting him to the finals was an achievement in itself but having got there, you can imagine their next ambition was to make the last 30.

Waiting for all 60 to go through was quite nail biting because she was again one of the early competitors to go and very gradually she dropped down the score sheet, “but” she didn’t go down too far and qualified to go through to the last 30; better still she did it by being in the top 10.  You can imagine the joy around the support team, not to mention Jane!

During the interval we all watched the play back of the video and Jane was quite impressed, mainly about Herbie who behaved impeccably, he has a history at some venues of playing up but not to day, he must have known the importance of everything.

1438hrs was her next time, also amongst the early riders.  Again I was on duty with camera to the “ready” when her turn came, once again Herbie behaved impeccably and Jane completed without a hitch so all we could do was wait, and wait, and wait until 1630hrs when all the competitor’s scores would be posted.

I stood by the score board not moving, just waiting as the lady kept arriving and posting scores as they happened.  Jane’s score went up, wow, 2nd at this point but still about 25 to go.

18 competitors scores were up and ouch, Jane dropped to 3rd, oh dear 12 to go, nail biting was happening throughout the support team; no one else stayed with me at the score board as the last scores went up.  In amongst these 12 was a competing friend of Jane’s  who had competed against her on many occasions and always won; unfortunately she still had to go, so we were a little despondent but hoped Jane would get into the top 5 at least.

The lady came with the score for Jane’s friend and wow, her marks were lower than Jane’s, that was another great achievement and a first for her, so third place was still held.  You can imagine we had run out of finger nails by this time and were well into our fingers.

Down to the last 2 and still 3rd but then no more scores, we were kept in suspenders!!! until suddenly the public address system burst into life and confirmed Jane Littlejohn was third overall, fantastic, well done, what an achievement with such a young horse.

So back to the Video as naturally we had to record the presentation.  The first three went into the inside arena and were presented with their rosettes and prize money!!! This was followed by un-tacking, giving herbie a well deserved supper, a quick change for Jane and then then off to Julie Hugo’s horse box for a well deserved glass off bubbly.  Julie is the Lady that trains Jane and Herbie, without her none of this would have been possible.

I arrived at the college at 0845 in the morning and drove out of the car park at 1830hrs,  a total of nine and three quarter hours, all for about 5 minutes of competing, is that good or what but it was all worth it, but more importantly, the weather generally behaved itself, another first I believe too!!!!!!

Our Wedding Day 7th April 2013

Well at long last the day has arrived, we have had so much stress getting here, but now it just feels good, everything is going to be OK.

I had agreed with Geoff that I would have breakfast at 9 am, whilst he was down earlier at 8 am, we had slept in different rooms very strange.  I had ironed the girls dresses before as I could not sleep, and then I went to see the hairdresser Emma, she was already doing Catriona hair, Jersey Jane was next, Jane and I were on at 10.30 am. At 11.30 am Photographer Lee arrived he was too early for us, so we sent him down to the golf course to photo the boys.

We opened the champagne, and several friends came in and out, Tracy, Joe, Jane, Helen,and Paula it was lovely, we were still having our hair done, but it was good fun, Tyla and Ashleigh came in to have their hair done, and I had to go and see the make-up lady, I  have never had allWED_5966 this fuss, but it was all good fun and a laugh, meanwhile Lee was still taking photos, dread to think what they look like.

WED_5545Time was ticking on, we started to get dressed, the flowers arrived, I had to have a quick drink as I was getting nervous now,  Andrew kept coming and going, it was lovely, Shaynee came in to see me, everything was going well.

Finally the time came to see the Registrar, to go over the legal bits, then we all went to the wedding room, I was shakingWED_5648 but very happy. Dave was outside, and said we all looked lovely, which calmed me a bit. At 4.02 pm  Mark (Toastmaster) started the music ‘Power of Love’ by Jennifer Rush, and I started walking up the aisle, supported by Andrew, Ashleigh, Tyla and Jane followed, it was lovely WED_5669to have the whole of the immediate family there sharing our day. With Mark as Best-man, and Dave being usher and doing a reading, (which he wrote himself) we wanted everyone involved.

Whilst the signing of the Register was being done, we had ‘O Sole Mio ‘ by the Three Tenors, after the legalities wereWED_5742 over, we walked out to Nat King Cole singing ‘Too Young’

A lovely service, not too long, and with a bit of humour, at one stage, I WED_5687was shaking so much that I had to hold my other hand whilst Geoff put my Mum’s wedding ring on, she had asked on lots of occasions when we were getting married, I just replied we could not afford a ring, so she left me hers.

Everyone filed past us, and we managed to have a quick word, we had 73 guests, sadly some could not make it, but thank you everyone for all your good wishes.  Photographs now, and fortunately the weather was WE2_1878kind to us, so we were all on the lawn in one big group, then the normal formal photos, we went WED_5867down to the lake and had some down by there, hopefully they will look good when they arrive.

We then went into the Westminster Suite, which had been laid out in 9 tables, plus top table, it looked lovely, we had named the tables after our boats, which intrigued some people. We had Smoked Salmon & Prawn Parcel with lime and coriander dressing, followed by Lamp flavoured with Rosemary & Mint served with red wine jus.  We had Pouilly Fume Calcite 2011 wine and Chateauneuf-Du Pape 2008 wine, both of which we had chosen whilst travelling through France. For sweet we had Glazed Lemon Tart with cream and sweet berry compote, it was all very good.

The cake was cut, we had one made, the shape of a Anam Cara our last boat, Tracy the cake lady had done a very good job on this, we were very pleased with it, tasted lovely too. The speeches were next, Andrew had told me that he didn’t know what to say, but when he stood up he produced a piece of paper, and made the funniest speech about several incidents that had happened since he knew Geoff, he made everyone laugh anyway.  Then Geoff did his bit, some serious, some funny, he presented Jane with a bouquet of chocolates, as a thank-you for being so helpful to me, she had been brilliant, then the girls, Mark and Andrew for all their help of making our day complete.  Mark did his bit, making jokes about  when we took the girls to Lapland with Geoff putting his ski-suit on, and also things that happened on the Stag Do!!  Both Mark and Andrew did us proud, a big thank-you.

We cleared the room, so we could get ready for the evening, several people had to leave, as they were travelling back to Cornwall, Farnborough,Reading and Coventry, as they have work tomorrow.

The first dance was ‘Sailing’ and Mark Pearson our music man for the evening, was brilliant, he kept the floor filled for most of the evening, we had everything from slow, rock n roll, modern, 60s’ 70’s 80’s and 90’s we had Dave doing some sort of dance, and Jane and I dancing on one of the tables, and the highlight of the evening was when Ashleigh sang to one of Westlife’s songs, she had learnt the words as a wedding present to us, she nearly reduced everyone to tears, she was fantastic.  Later in the evening she did another song.

What a brilliant day, we shall treasure the memories, everything worked out so well, and we hope those who shared it with us enjoyed it as much as we did, I think I smiled from first thing in the morning, until 2 am the following day. BRILLIANTWED_5933

Hen Day – Malvern Spa

Up early and down for breakfast, we have to be at the Spa for 9.30 am,

we all met in reception, then off we went, seven of us all told, ready for a good old laugh!

We arrived on time, and were given instructions on what and where everything was, we were all told what time are treatments were, and to go and enjoy, which we certainly did.

They had an inside – outside pool, and it was a glorious day, so we swam in and out, but most of the spa treatments were out, so with a lovely blue sky, we sat in the various areas in a pool that was heated to at least 30 degrees, it was lovely.

One of the attendants gave us teas, coffees, fruit juices, whilst we lounged around, very civilised.

They also had steam rooms, ice room, saunas, which we all used, I was pushed into a shower, which had a large bucket of ice cold water, whichHen Party 06Apr13 010 Jane, then dropped on me, we then had an ice fight, until someone came in saying ‘children children behave’ some people have no sense of humour!!

Hen Party 06Apr13 014At 11.00 am some of the girls went and had treatments, massages and manicures, were the order of the day, I had a pedicure just to be different. Just as they were finishing, Jane came and put ear muffs on me, and a sash advertising the fact that I was the bride to be, very embarrassing, I then had to walk into lunch wearing it, only to findHen Party 06Apr13 017 they had decorated the table with balloons, and confetti, and several presents were handed to me.

I had various naughty gifts, including straws with a willy on the end, which Jane insisted that we all used, a bottle top, which was rude, and a willy whistle,plus a glass which lit up and had a willy at the bottom, I had to drink out of that as well,  all good fun, and the video was on all the time courtesy of Catriona.

Lunch was taken, which was lovely, I had crayfish and prawns with salad and advocada, very good, we then left and asked where we could go, for a drive, to see some more of the arear, they suggested Great Malvern, saying we could have a nice cream tea, which we did.
